BUCKHORN, Ont. — Beachwood Resort, located north of Peterborough, Ont., in the Kawartha Lakes, is celebrating its 90th birthday by presenting long-time guests with commemorative towels.
Each Sunday during the summer, staff host a party with birthday cake on the resort's front lawn. Guests who have been coming to the resort for 10 or more consecutive years are presented with their towels.
“We had a hard time deciding who should receive a gift and what to give them,” said Dave Morgan, who runs the resort along with his sister, Krista. “And then there are the guests who have been coming for eight or nine years. We told them there's always the 95th anniversary, or the 100th.”
Built in 1926, Beachwood Lodge was operated as a fishing camp catering to American guests during July and August.
The resort has been in the Morgan family since 1944, when Harry and Florence Morgan purchased the lodge and along with their two sons, Frederick and Richard, they continued to operate it as a fishing destination. There were cottages and rooms in the lodge. All guests received meals and accommodations.
In 1971, Karen and Fred took over the operations and together with their three children, Steve, David and Krista, continued the tradition. Over the years cottages and lodge rooms were renovated and condos were added. Guests now had choices regarding menu items and meal plans. The new name developed as Beachwood Resort.
The third generation of Morgan’s is now running the property. Beachwood caters to guests seeking lakeside vacations, family getaways, weddings, meetings and retreats. Frederick’s at Beachwood is the licensed restaurant located in the main lodge featuring the cuisine of chef Michael Henson.
And members of the fourth generation — Tyler, Wade, Clayton, Harlee, Jack, Nicholas, Braden and Caleb — are now helping out in various jobs around the resort.
