Guelph/Cornell partner for Hospitality Leadership Workshop

GUELPH, Ont. — Recognizing a need in the industry for professional development in hospitality and tourism, the University of Guelph is launching a three-day Hospitality Leadership Workshop in partnership with e-Cornell.

GUELPH, Ont. — Recognizing a need in the industry for professional development in hospitality and tourism, the University of Guelph is launching a three-day Hospitality Leadership Certificate Workshop in partnership with e-Cornell. The program has both an online and a three-day workshop component. The workshop takes place May 9-12 on the University of Guelph campus. 

“It's a professional development program Guelph launched in partnership with Cornell University, the two leading hospitality institutions of North America,” said Statia Elliot, director of Guelph's School of Hospitality, Food & Tourism Management.

Students who enroll in this program are F&B managers, front office supervisors, guest services managers, operations managers, general managers, room controllers, property owner/ operators, and those who are transitioning into the hospitality field.

“A lot of people in mid-level management just need a little more education and credentials to advance to a more senior level,” Elliot said. “Sometimes they have many years in the business, or have advanced without education.

“We're down to filling the last spots,” she said, adding that they plan to run the program at least every second year.  The registration deadline for this year's course is April 1.

The program is a modernized version of the HMDC program Guelph used to run. “It fell by the wayside, but there are still calls asking for it,” Elliot said. “Times have changed. Initially, the HMDC program was three week [on-campus] program; now it's three days,” Elliot explained.

The three days are very intensive, giving participants tools to self-assess their leadership style and the dynamics of the workplace. The workshop includes simulation, experiential team building, and social events, including an icebreaker session and a Scotch tasting.

For the online program, students choose from four elective tracks. The three core courses cover interpreting and using financial statements, leading people, and hospitality marketing. The track they choose gives them two elective courses that provide additional emphasis on financial management, foodservice, marketing or revenue management. 

Participants who successfully complete the five courses and the 3-day onsite workshop in this program receive a Hospitality Leadership Certificate from University of Guelph and the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University.
