LAS VEGAS — Rivea, Alain Ducasse's restaurant atop Delano Hotel, turned into a little piece of Canada complete with Mounties and Canadian wine as Choice Hotels Canada celebrated the sesquicentennial in style. The Canadian celebration was held last night in conjunction with the Choice Hotels International Convention on this week at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
As owners, general managers and suppliers mingled and enjoyed the balcony view from the 64th floor, servers circulated with hors d'oeuvres and drinks.
Choice Hotels Canada managing director Brian Leon welcomed guests, and announced the evening's two award winners.
Alfred Groom, Choice Canada's first franchisee, who owns the 94-room Quality Inn, in Summerside, P.E.I., was the winner of the rarely-awarded Hall of Fame Award. Groom was still en route to the conference and will receive his award tonight.
Jonathan Shead, general manager of the Comfort Inn & Suites Campbell River, B.C., received the award for Hotel of the Year from Leon and Judy Sparkes-Giannou, chair of the CCFAB (Choice Canada Franchise Advisory Board).
