Ascend sets record for openings
Md. — The Ascend Hotel Collection, the world's
first and largest soft brand from Choice Hotels International, Inc., closed
out 2018 by awarding the most franchise agreements in the brand's history.

LEMAYMICHAUD Architecture & Design, the Alt Hotel Calgary East Village
features an ultramodern design inspired by the neighbourhood's industrial past.
The exterior design is reminiscent of factories from another era, including the
neighbouring building: the former Simmons mattress factory.
In addition to the
opening, the company is pleased to announce that two restaurants will be
joining the Alt Hotel Calgary East Village. First, CHIX Eggshop will be
led by long time Le Germain Hotel Calgary collaborators Connie DeSousa and John
Jackson, co-chefs and owners of CHARCUT Roast House and charbar at
the Simmons. CHIX Eggshop concept is a fast-fine diner which is a
quirky, nostalgic, counter service–only breakfast and lunch spot, with
skillfully crafted and quickly served dishes alongside super-hip craft beverages
and cocktails that are sure to shake things up. CHIX Eggshop is
scheduled to open later this spring.

The second restaurant to
open will be Barshoku by renowned chef Darren MacLean. Barshoku
is a sleek upscale concept that will purely celebrate fish and local Canadian
vegetables. Opting to serve no meat, the restaurant will instead utilize fish
and plants in new and exciting ways. MacLean’s philosophy of fin-to-scale
cuisine will reflect in the innovative sushi options and ambitious nigiri
creations featuring Canada’s first dry aging chamber specially designed for
C Hôtels in Mont-Tremblant
MONT-TREMBLANT, Que. — C Hôtels is investing approximately $45 million in a luxury-hotel complex with a spa at the foot of Versant Soleil in Mont-Tremblant, Que. C Hôtels Tremblant — a condominium project with hotel management — will be located just steps from the chairlift, next to a private lake and Casino de Mont-Tremblant.

The C Hôtels network currently boasts eight establishments (hotels and spas), as well as a ski-in, ski-out condominium complex at Massif de Charlevoix. The C Hôtels Tremblant project continues the company’s goal of having 20 establishments in Quebec by 2022.
Comfort grows in the U.S.
The Comfort brand, franchised by Choice Hotels International,
Inc., continues to advance
its transformation with over 700 properties certified Move to Modern,
450 hotels in the process of obtaining new signage, and more than 170 hotels
having installed new signs.
In addition, Choice
awarded close to 120 Comfort brand franchise agreements in 2018 as it expands
around the U.S.
Four Seasons has nine openings in 2019
The coming year will mark several significant new openings for Four
Seasons Hotels and Resorts, with the debut of nine new hotels and resorts
around the world, plus the continued expansion of its residential portfolio.
Canada has made the expansion list with the Four Seasons Hotel and Private Residences Montreal. The company’s fourth property in Canada will open in the heart of Montreal’s best shopping neighbourhood. The 169-room hotel and 18 private residences will be connected to the new Holt Renfrew Ogilvy in the Golden Square Mile neighbourhood and will feature the first Canadian restaurant by famed chef Marcus Samuelsson.

Global pipeline for hotels
STR’s international pipeline data lists the top five countries by region with the most hotel rooms with projected opening dates in 2019.
Projections for Canada are 5,127 rooms, or 14.3 per cent of the total for the Americas excluding the U.S. The regional total is 36,568 rooms.
The U.S. has the largest pipeline of any country in the world: STR data shows more than 150,000 rooms with projected opening dates of 2019. China's pipeline shows 82,559 rooms. Japan, Germany and United Arab Emirates all plan to open more than 25,000 rooms in 2019.
Group Germain: 20th hotel at Ottawa Airport
OTTAWA – Canadian
hotelier Group Germain Hotels and the Ottawa International Airport Authority have announced today the construction of the Alt Hotel Ottawa Airport, an investment
of $40 million.
The hotel will have 180 comfortable and modern rooms on eight
floors. The meeting rooms (about 3,000 square feet) and a restaurant will be
located on the top floor of the new building, providing an incomparable 3600
view of the airport’s operations. An indoor skywalk will connect the hotel to
the airport terminal for ease of use of travellers. The hotel is scheduled to
open late 2020.
“This announcement marks an important milestone for
Group Germain Hotels. It means that we have reached our goal of 20 hotels by

Developer plans mixed use development in Ottawa

New management for Westin Prince Hotel
ATLANTA – Atlanta-based
hotel owner, operator and developer, Hotel Equities (HE),
announced they have been selected as the management firm for the 394-room Westin Prince Toronto. The luxury resort style hotel is
located at 900 York Mills Road in North York and offers 28,000 square feet of
versatile event space. The ownership group has invested in a major renovation
including guest rooms and public space. The renovations are expected to be
completed in the summer of 2019.

Paragon Gaming sells its interest in Parq Vancouver
LAS VEGAS – Developer and gaming operator Paragon Gaming has announced that it has sold its ownership position in British Columbia’s Parq Vancouver to PBC Group for an undisclosed amount. The transaction ends Paragon Gaming’s affiliation with the resort destination, which debuted to the public in September 2017.
Paragon Gaming, Dundee 360Vox and PBC Group played an instrumental role in the design, development, and pre-opening operations of Parq Vancouver. Beginning in 2006, Paragon Gaming acquired Edgewater Casino, the only licensed casino in the City of Vancouver. Paragon managed Edgewater for more than 10 years before the relocation of gaming operations to Parq Vancouver, at which time Parq assumed all management functions. Paragon also assisted in the management of pre-construction approvals and permits for the project.
