JW Marriott plans 2018 Edmonton launch

EDMONTON — The JW Marriott Edmonton, expected to open in late 2018, will be the first luxury hotel in the city’s ICE District, Canada's largest mixed-use sports and entertainment district, it was announced on Jan. 14. The property, a collaboration between Marriott International and ICE District Properties Joint Venture, was chosen to replace the former Delta Hotel when Marriott acquired Delta Hotels and Resorts last year.

“The new JW Marriott property will provide guests with enriching luxury in the heart of downtown Edmonton,” said Don Cleary, president, Marriott Hotels of Canada, in a release.

The hotel will feature 356 rooms and suites, more than 25,000 square feet of meeting and conference space and one of the city's largest ballrooms at over 10,000 square feet, according to Marriott. The hotel will also feature Spa by JW and a restaurant operated by one of Canada's premier restaurateurs.

Palm Holdings purchases Inn at Calypso Cay

KISSIMMEE, FLA. — Palm Holdings announced on Dec. 16 that it has bought the Inn at Calypso Cay-Lake Buena Vista South, in Kissimmee, Fla.

A Walt Disney World Good Neighbor Hotel, the Inn at Calypso Cay features 162 guestrooms, including family suites with bunk beds. In addition, the property features three pools, waterslides, poolside Tiki Bar, family splash pad, sports court, beach volleyball and miniature golf. Complimentary transportation is provided for all hotel guests to Walt Disney World theme parks.

Rounding out the hotel’s onsite amenities is a picnic area with gas grills, business centre, fitness centre, games room, gift shop and complimentary Wi-Fi.

This acquisition further establishes Palm Holdings’ footprint in Florida, where it looks to continue acquiring hotels and establishing a larger company presence.
