CALGARY — Ken Kirkby, of Super 8 Peterborough, Ontario, was named General Manager of the Year at the 2016 Wyndham Hotel Group Global Conference in Las Vegas, it was announced last month.

To be eligible for the award, each candidate must be an active member of his/her community in addition to being a general manager of a Pride of Super 8 hotel. Further criteria include serving as GM for the same property for the entire award period, Jan.1, 2015 to Dec. 31, 2015, with no ownership or other financial interest in the property.

“Ken Kirkby is one of those rare industry leaders. His focus on superior guest satisfaction, amplified by guest recognition and appreciation, is a hallmark of the service orientation that has taken his team to be consistently recognized with awards,” said Marc Staniloff, president and CEO, Superior Lodging Corp., in a release. “Ken has depth of experience over his 25-year career and it shows. His team of highly engaged employees has been awarded the Pride of Super 8 designation in each of the seven years since opening and a Top Performing Property award in 2013. The property has received the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence award for six consecutive years since 2011 and continues to receive numerous local awards as selected by readers of Peterborough This Week, measuring guest satisfaction with local businesses.”

Active in the local community, both in terms of promoting and growing the Super 8 brand and also in serving the community, particularly in terms of activities fostering the growth of tourism to the benefit of the hotel industry, Kirkby was the driving force in Super 8 Peterborough being a founding member of the Peterborough Destination Association.

Kirkby was elected to the Regional Tourism Organization 8 – Kawarthas Northumberland board of directors in 2012, and in 2014 was elected chairman of the board for the organization, where he acted as the primary spokesperson and was a key liaison with government, organizational staff and tourism stakeholders in the region.

“This is a tremendous honor,” said Kirkby, who has worked at the Super 8 Peterborough since the hotel was built in 2008, in a release. “I am humbled by the award as there are many outstanding general managers in the Super 8 System. I consider myself fortunate to do the work that I love to do and to work with a team that welcomes the challenge to take the operation and the guest experience to the next level, year after year.”
