Dr. J. Charles Grieco receives an honorary doctorate from University of Guelph in 2014.

J. Charles Grieco passed away at Toronto Grace Health Centre on Tuesday,
January 29, 2019. He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret; their sons
and families. Following a highly successful
35-year career with his father as owners and operators of the renowned La Scala
Restaurant, setting a new standard for fine cuisine and dining, Charles was a
founding director, chair and president of the Ontario Hostelry Institute since
1977 and subsequently became managing director at the Canadian Hospitality
Foundation.

He was recognized as a leading thinker on key issues facing the
Canadian hospitality industry. He participated in the provincial commission
that led to the formation of the Vintners Quality Alliance. His unwavering dedication
has fostered a great many of today's leaders in the hospitality, culinary and
tourism sector. Charles' passion for education and standards that he
encompassed is contagious to all. 

For more than 20 years, his Annual Gold
Awards Galas at the Four Seasons Hotel were a sell out and raised over $1.5
million, and supported and inspired more than 450 students to become tomorrow's
leaders in the industry. He shared his wisdom and dreams with the University of
Guelph, School of Hospitality, with George Brown College, Centre for
Hospitality and Culinary Arts, the Chefs' House and Metro Toronto Convention
Centre. Charles initiated an undertakingthat produced the first textual
compilation of hospitality law in Ontario.

Superior Lodging Corp. has appointed of Erin Penner in the role of development
director, Western Canada. In her new role, Penner will be responsible for
development in Western Canada, spanning from British Columbia to Manitoba, and
will sell both of the fast-growing Travelodge by Wyndham and Super 8 by Wyndham
brands. She will report to Nigel Lucas, executive vice president franchising
& development, Superior Lodging Corp. Prior to joining the
Superior Lodging Corp. team, Penner worked for Visions Electronics as a national account manager with a focus on the hospitality industry. During her
12 years at Visions, she gained a wealth of experience and knowledge through
many successively senior roles. Her driven and results-oriented nature was
evident from the start of her career when she worked on a BSC in Biology at the
University of Manitoba while simultaneously working full time.

Chef Murray McDonald has moved to Spirit Ridge, Unbound Collection by Hyatt in Osoyoos, B.C. as executive chef. Chef McDonald's career has taken him across Canada and around the world as far as Mexico and New Zealand. He has worked as executive chef at Ritz-Carlton Toronto, Cluny Bistro and Boulangerie in Toronto, Fogo Island Inn in Joe Batts Arm, N.L. and the Fairmont Pacific Rim in Vancouver. Earlier, he worked at the Ritz-Carlton in Cancun, Mexico, and Huka Lodge and Millbrook Resort in New Zealand.

Douglas Lisi has joined the Choice Hotels International as vice president of
revenue management. In this
role, Lisi will lead the company’s revenue management organization and
functions, including trend analysis, forecasting, and price optimization, to
help Choice franchisees maximize gross room revenue (GRR), manage their
inventory, and increase profitability. In addition to managing Choice’s
proprietary revenue management tools, including SmartRates, he will also focus
on growing the company’s corporate and group business travel and work cross
functionally to develop and implement strategies supporting continued growth
across all of Choice’s hotel brands.

Jill
Burke
 has been promoted to regional vice president of franchise services for Choice Hotels International. In this role, Burke
will lead the company’s area directors, a team of franchise operations business
consultants, to drive system-wide hotel performance and owner satisfaction
throughout the central United States. Burke
joined Choice Hotels in 2013 as an area director. Most recently, she served as a regional area
director, where she help revise Choice’s orientation and
training platform for new hotel owners and general managers, and in the
creation of Choice’s pricing optimization system. Burke
brings nearly 30 years of industry experience to her new role. 

In 2018, CWB Franchise
Finance funded over 20 hotel transactions for over $385 million across
Canada. They also announced the promotion of Cameron Woof to a management
role as AVP, Hotel Finance & Syndication reporting to Ed Khediguian. CWB
Franchise Finance has continued to expand the team. Patrick Schofield, a
long time employee at Franchise Finance, was promoted to a Senior Manager role
for hotel originations, covering Eastern Canada, reporting into Cameron. CLN
earlier reported on the addition of Mike Macklem as a senior
manager for hotel originations, covering Western Canada, also reporting to
Cameron Woof.

Cameron Woof originally joined
the Franchise Finance team when the team operated under the GE Capital
organization in April 2008 as a Structuring Risk Manager. Cameron evolved to a
Account Manager for the hotel sector focused on western Canada in August of
2011 and now will manage the whole originations efforts nationwide against the
hotel sector. Prior to Franchise Finance, Cameron, work at HLT Advisory,
focused on providing consulting services to the Gaming, Hotel, and Tourism
sectors. Cameron is a graduate from
the University of Guelph in Hospitality & Tourism Management.

Patrick Schofield has been appointed senior manager hotel finance for Eastern
Canada, CWB Franchise Finance. In this role, he will lead the
originations efforts for hotel lending for CWB Franchise Finance for key
hotel owner/operators and developers across Eastern Canadian markets. Schofield originally joined the Franchise Finance team when the team operated under the
GE Capital organization in January 2012 as a co-op intern during university.
Patrick joined the business full time in May 2013 following graduation and has
since help a wide range of roles across the Franchise Finance business.

Amit
Patel
is currently building a Microtel Inn & Suites and
Cabin Creek Brewery in historic Georgetown, Colorado. Previously, Patel was director of franchise sales for Teriyaki Madness,
director of franchise sales and development at Radisson Hotel Group for a
territory that included Western Canada, and director of franchise
development/new construction at Wyndham Hotel Group.
